MISSION: Art education is fundamental in human growth and provides students with intellectual, creative and emotional experiences that connect them to a complete core of knowledge. Art provides opportunities to use imagination, higher level thinking skills, and problem solving skills. Art allows for expression of the human spirit and validates feelings in studying, creating and responding to art and the environment. Art education will heighten an appreciation for visual literacy and the challenges of creative self-expression.
BASIC COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will explore basic knowledge in numerous two and three dimensional mediums, varied cultures and historical times. Students are able to explore areas of artistic interest in more depth as they develop technical, perceptual, expressive, critical and problem-solving skills. Understanding the role of art in society is a dominant theme as students expand their art historical knowledge. By studying how other people respond to visual forms, students gain insight into their own ways of responding and examine personal growth and concepts of art growing in complexity throughout the program.
MY GOALS: Students will be able to listen critically and speak articulately, will be able to resolve conflicts effectively and appropriately. They will also be able to understand and appreciate diverse individuals and cultures. Students will be able to learn to look at and talk about art in an informed manner. They will be able to exercise leadership qualities. At the middle school level, we focus on: teaching basic fundamentals of art. Building on previously acquired art skills as well as introducing new techniques and media. Students are encouraged to express themselves creatively while improving their artistic skills.
GOALS OF THE CLASS: 1) Express original ideas through artworks using a variety of art media. 2) Students will learn to appropriately evaluate their own artwork and works made by others. 3) Keep a collection of lessons and work to access development of personal growth.
RUBRIC: The students will be given a set of expectations for each project or unit of study that will be graded according to the following. Following directions and expectations set forth at the start of the assignment. Use of the appropriate media and materials associated with each activity. Composition, arrangement, use of space and overall design. Effort, quality, presentation and craftsmanship. Creativity, experimentation with the use of their knowledge. Meeting lesson objective and time on task.
